Vancouver, with its strong Asian influence, has an energetic,
lively Chinatown. This is the second-largest Chinatown in North
America, next to San Francisco’s. Come hungry when you visit
Chinatown; try some dim sum for lunch! Centered on Pender and
Keefer streets between Carrall and Gore are a host of bustling
shops, restaurants and markets.
Some of the oldest surviving architecture in the city, these
buildings now house stores that sell exotic giftware. A traditional
gate frames the entrance to the Chinese Cultural Centre, which
hosts exhibitions and lectures and operates walking tours. The
Sam Kee Building at 8 West Pender is the narrowest commercial
building in the world. Hidden behind high walls is the Dr. Sun
Yat-Sen Garden, an impressive classical Chinese garden in Ming
Dynasty style- the first authentic of its kind outside China.
It’s a great place to relax. Guided tours are also available
in the summer months.
Visit the Garden even if it’s raining, as covered walkways
will protect you from the elements.
