In 1915, M.B. Skaggs, an ambitious young man  purchased a tiny grocery store from his father.His business strategy, to give his customers value and to expand by keeping a narrow profit margin.This strategy proving spectacular success.Today M.B. Skagg's value vision still drives Safeway, though on a dramatically larger scale. There are 1,775 Safeway stores across the US and Canada.

Lifestyle stores are designed for busy customers who want to find everything in one place- great selection, knowledgeable staff, specialty items, and ready-to-eat meals. The Lifestyle stores, some new and some remodeled, feature inviting décor and subdued lighting that creates a relaxing atmosphere for shopping. The many specialized departments of Lifestyle stores include:

Meat-Experienced employees can offer suggestions for entrées, cut meat according to the shopper's request, and add marinades or seasonings at no extra charge; there are prepared foods, such as stuffed pork loin and other prepared meats and stuffed Cornish game hens.

Seafood-A self-serve counter enables quick shopping and also provides special services for customers; employees can add marinades, liquid seasonings, or dry rubs to a customer's purchase.  

Produce-This department provides hundreds of fresh items delivered daily. The "Guaranteed Sweet" program is designed to ensure that customers receive the freshest and sweetest products each and every day. Safeway also has expanded its organic produce offerings to include over 40 fresh items daily, as well as a variety of cookbooks and complementary housewares.
 
Delicatessen and Food Service-Signature items exclusive to Safeway include fresh, custom-made sandwiches, panini, and an extensive variety of soups. Additionally this expanded department offers an olive bar, over 100 specialty cheeses, dozens of fresh salads, and a wide assortment of luncheon meats. At Your Table items are ready-to-eat, chef-inspired meals.

Scratch Bakery-Professionals bake fresh bakery goods daily; a wide selection of breads and desserts include made-to-order cakes and Europeanstyle artisan desserts made with Belgian chocolate and other imported Ingredients, creamery butter, and freshly whipped cream.

Gifts and Flowers-Shoppers will find an assortment of fresh plants and flowers and may request custom designed arrangements; in addition, there are home décor and gift items, novelty chocolates, scented candles, vases, pottery, and cards. Additional conveniences are offered at many Lifestyle stores, such as a full-service Starbucks coffee shop, an in-store seating area, and an in-store Bank of Montreal kiosk.
